This project focuses on the development of sustainability strategies for the Lamy Al-Star Fountain Pen, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. We delved into the environmental impact of the product while considering consumer attitudes and behavioral patterns. Through comprehensive analysis, a series of innovative strategies aimed at enhancing the overall sustainability of the product were proposed.

Strategy 1 - Design for recycling

Using recycled materials can significantly reduce environmental impact without much change to the existing production line. Take aluminum as an example, when recycled aluminum is used, the

total impact of using a fountain pen for 10 years has a 27% decrease. Impacts on Carcinogenics decrease the most. For the specific part, the impact is down by 97%.

Fountain pens often include numerous small components that can easily get lost during the recycling process.

Strategy 2 - Reinvent the ink experience

Carcinogenic is the greatest impact category. Ans acquisition of glass for the ink bottle is the main cause. Alternative packaging of the ink can be one possible way of intervention.

Analysis Process

Before diving in the project, I did some research to identify the brand and product value.

Artistic expression and rich sensations involvement are becoming increasingly important parts of fountain pen’s service to users in this digital age. Maintaining and magnifying such qualities are important while thinking about more sustainable solutions.

Setting a suitable boundary is key for a productive LCA analysis. For this study, all life cycle stages, all physical parts, ink, transportation, tissue paper used when adding ink are included.

Process Tree can help provide a overall concept of the potential environmental risks from raw material to end of life.
