Over 70% of long-tenured (10+ years) ultrasound technicians suffer from musculoskeletal diseases. They may also suffer from waist and back pain due to the tilted sitting position.

I led a comprehensive user research initiative involving interviews with over 40 ultrasound practitioners and on-site observation to map the actual workflow and specific tool requirements associated with each transducer type.

To figure out the specific adjustment needed, I hosted some 8 person fatigue tests for some typical transducers.

Prior to each fatigue test, an expert-validated workflow was created to ensure protocol adherence and realistic usage of the transducers.

To accurately capture the grip positions of users with varying hand sizes, we employed thermochromic paint for detailed analysis of hand-transducer contact and pressure points.

For specialized tools, such as the biopsy (puncture) transducer, we ensured the most realistic simulation possible. This involved utilizing surgical-related props and equipment to proactively identify any unforeseen usability risks in a high-fidelity environment.

By cross-analyzing user fatigue data with grip position and hand size, we successfully generated quantitative design modifications. This data was directly provided to the design team, guiding the final ergonomic shape and form factor of the product.

The biopsy transducer's ergonomic overhaul was empirically validated, with every test participant confirming a noticeable decrease in fatigue during usage.
